Eco Council meet every Monday to discuss how we can make our school a more environmentally friendly place. This year we are going to be working with school leaders to complete tasks on the schools Eco Action Plan and are excited to get started!
It is always very exciting to welcome our new Eco Councillors for the year and hear all about what their vision is for the year. We each had a time to share our ideas and vision for the term. We agreed we all felt passionately about improving the schools recycling schemes. Last year the brand that recycled our pens stopped taking them but Eco Council were passionate about finding an alternative way to avoid this waste.
We found out the brand ‘edding’, who make various different board pens, give out free recycling boxes to schools who buy these products. As we use these pens throughout the school, we contacted the brand and they sent us two recycling boxes to get started. You can recycle any brand of pen in the box no matter which brand or type it is!
Eco Council made smaller boxes for our classrooms to collect the old pens and will be in charge of taking the pens down to the collection point. When it is full, we can send it back to the company and fill our next box.
Next on our agenda is to discuss trialling a new brand of glue which is refillable! We will be discussing this at our next meeting and deciding which class could trial them. We will also need to decide which key events we would like to participate in later this year, such as Walk to School Week.
Our school’s climate action plan is designed to reduce our environmental impact and promote sustainability across the school. We need this plan because climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time, and schools play a vital role in shaping responsible citizens. By cutting energy use, minimising waste, and encouraging eco-friendly habits, we can help protect the planet for future generations while setting an example for our community.
We have calculated our carbon footprint to understand where we can make the biggest improvements.

Our carbon baseline: 248.65 t CO2e Calculation: October 2025 |

The School Council will be looking at how we can raise awareness and reduce our carbon footprint.
Thank you to everyone who has been collecting and adding old pens and ink cartridges to our recycling bins at the entrance to the school. We are pleased to say that we have now added a third bin for collecting used batteries for recycling. Each class will also have a small box for collecting batteries which the class Eco Councillor will empty in to the bin in the foyer at regular intervals. Alternatively, they can also be added straight in to the bin in the foyer. Thank you for supporting us with our recycling initiatives.
There is also a textile recycling container in our front car park. This recycling facility is for the whole school community to use and the school will benefit financially from the textiles that are collected (weight = income).
As you will appreciate, initiatives such as this come with Terms and Conditions. The key points for us are what can and can not be placed in the container. This information will be listed below.
Please feel free to use the facility at the beginning and end of the school day. The container will be emptied every fortnight. Please do not leave textiles on the ground (if the container is full) as the company will not receive wet goods.
Thank you in advance for supporting this project.
